How the Fear & Greed Index works
The index combines several signals into one number: price volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends. A low value means traders are fearful; a high value means they are greedy.
How traders use it
- As a contrarian signal — long-term investors often accumulate slowly during extreme fear and take profits during extreme greed.
- As a risk check — during extreme greed, use smaller positions and tighter stop-losses.
- Never alone — combine it with price structure, trend and your own trading plan.
