What is forex trading?

Forex (foreign exchange, or FX) is the global market where currencies are exchanged. Every trade is a pair: when you buy EUR/USD you buy euros and sell US dollars at the same time. If the euro gains against the dollar, the trade makes money; if it falls, it loses.

There is no central exchange. Banks, companies, funds and retail traders trade through a network of dealers, which is why the market runs 24 hours a day from Sydney to New York. Prices move on interest rates, inflation, jobs data, central-bank speeches and global risk sentiment.

The 7 major currency pairs

EUR/USDFiber
Euro vs US dollar — the most traded pair in the world
USD/JPYGopher
US dollar vs Japanese yen — driven by US and Japanese interest rates
GBP/USDCable
British pound vs US dollar — fast-moving in the London session
USD/CHFSwissie
US dollar vs Swiss franc — the franc is a classic safe haven
AUD/USDAussie
Australian dollar — linked to commodities and China
USD/CADLoonie
Canadian dollar — moves with crude oil prices
NZD/USDKiwi
New Zealand dollar — sensitive to dairy prices and global risk

Four ideas every forex trader must master

1

Pip

The smallest standard price step — 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for yen pairs. On one standard lot of EUR/USD a pip is worth $10.

2

Lot

Trade size. A standard lot is 100,000 units, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. Beginners should start with micro lots.

3

Leverage & margin

Leverage lets a small deposit (margin) control a large position. 1:30 means $1,000 controls $30,000 — and a 3.3% move against you wipes out that margin.

4

Risk per trade

Professionals risk 0.5–2% of their account on one trade and decide the stop-loss before the entry. Position size comes from the stop, not from hope.

Trading forex from India?

Indian residents may trade currencies only through RBI-authorised persons — in practice, currency futures and options on recognised Indian exchanges (NSE, BSE and MSE), such as USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR. The RBI warns that trading on unauthorised online forex platforms or sending money abroad for margin is not allowed under FEMA and can lead to penalties. Check the RBI Alert List before you open any account.

Trading from outside India?

Choose a broker licensed by your own regulator (for example the FCA in the UK, ASIC in Australia or the NFA/CFTC in the USA), use the leverage limits it sets, and never trade money you cannot afford to lose. Our course teaches the skills — we are not a broker and do not handle client funds.

Forex trading — FAQ

Is forex trading good for beginners?

It can be, if you start with education, a demo account and micro lots. Most beginners lose money because they use too much leverage and no stop-loss — fix those two things first.

How much money do I need to start?

Many brokers accept small deposits, but the right amount is money you can afford to lose. With micro lots and 1% risk per trade, a few hundred dollars is enough to practise real risk management.

When is the best time to trade forex?

Liquidity is highest when London and New York are both open — roughly 13:00 to 17:00 GMT (6:30 pm to 10:30 pm IST). The clock on this page shows which sessions are open right now.

Is forex trading legal in India?

Yes, on recognised Indian exchanges and in permitted currency pairs. Trading through unauthorised international forex apps or websites is not permitted for Indian residents.

Do you give buy/sell signals?

No. BullishBrush is an education provider. We teach you to read the market and build your own plan; we do not give tips or manage money.
