Barcode types explained

  • EAN-13 — 13 digits, used on retail products worldwide.
  • UPC-A — 12 digits, used in the USA and Canada.
  • Code 128 — compact, holds letters, numbers and symbols; ideal for inventory, assets and shipping.
  • ITF-14 — for outer cartons and cases.
  • Code 39 — older industrial standard, letters and numbers.

Important: to sell in retail stores or on marketplaces you need barcode numbers licensed to your brand by GS1. This tool creates the image for the number you already own.

FAQ

Which barcode type should I use?

Retail products sold in shops and on marketplaces use EAN-13 (worldwide) or UPC-A (USA and Canada). For internal stock, warehouses and shipping labels, Code 128 is the most flexible because it holds letters and numbers.

Can I sell products on Amazon with a barcode made here?

The tool draws the barcode image for any number you enter. Retail barcodes must use a number licensed to your company by GS1 (GS1 India in India). Do not use random numbers on products you sell in stores or on marketplaces.

What size should I print?

Print EAN-13 at 100% size (about 37 × 26 mm) or slightly larger, in black on a white background, with clear space on both sides. Always test-scan before printing in bulk.

What is the check digit?

EAN and UPC codes end with a check digit that scanners use to catch errors. Type 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A) and the tool adds the correct check digit for you.
