What Is Pine Script? A Beginner's Guide to TradingView Strategies

· BullishBrush · 3 min read

Pine Script is TradingView's programming language. It lets you create your own indicators and trading strategies that run directly on TradingView charts — for stocks, indices, forex, crypto and commodities. If you have ever used a community indicator on TradingView, it was written in Pine Script.

You do not need to become a programmer to benefit from it. This guide explains what Pine Script is, what a strategy looks like and how you can get working scripts without writing code.

Indicators vs strategies

Pine Script can create two kinds of scripts:

  • Indicators draw lines, shapes or panels on your chart — for example, a custom moving average or a signal arrow.
  • Strategies simulate trades. They place entries and exits according to rules, and TradingView's Strategy Tester shows the results: net profit, number of trades, win rate, drawdown and a list of trades.

For testing trading ideas, strategies are what you want.

What a simple Pine Script strategy looks like

Here is the idea behind a basic moving-average crossover strategy (in plain words):

  1. Calculate a 9-period EMA and a 21-period EMA.
  2. If the 9 crosses above the 21 and you have no position, buy.
  3. If the 9 crosses below the 21, close the position.
  4. Optionally, attach a stop-loss and take-profit.

In Pine Script v6 this is roughly fifteen lines: a strategy() declaration with capital and commission settings, the two ta.ema() calculations, ta.crossover() and ta.crossunder() conditions, and strategy.entry() / strategy.close() calls.

Why Pine Script matters for Indian traders

Free backtesting data for Indian stocks and indices is hard to get. TradingView has it. With a Pine Script strategy, you can test the same rules on Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, Reliance, HDFC Bank or any other symbol available on TradingView, on any timeframe your plan supports.

How to run a Pine Script strategy

  1. Open a chart on TradingView.
  2. Open the Pine Editor at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Paste the script and click Add to chart.
  4. Open the Strategy Tester tab to see results.
  5. Change the symbol or timeframe to test elsewhere.

Getting Pine Script without coding

Our no-code strategy builder lets you build rules visually — EMA, SMA, RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, stochastic, breakout levels, stop-loss and take-profit — and backtest them instantly on crypto data. With BullishBrush Pro, you can export the same strategy as ready-to-paste Pine Script v6 and test it on any TradingView symbol.

The exported code follows Pine Script best practices, such as calculating every condition on every bar, so results are consistent.

Pine Script tips if you do code

  • Use the latest version (//@version=6).
  • Set realistic commission_value and slippage in the strategy() call.
  • Avoid functions that look into the future; be careful with request.security() on higher timeframes.
  • Check results on several symbols and periods, not one.
  • Never trust a strategy that looks perfect — read how to backtest a trading strategy.

Limitations

  • TradingView's free plan limits how much history some features use; paid plans offer more.
  • Backtests assume fills that may not happen exactly in live markets.
  • A script is only as good as the idea behind it.

Key takeaways

  • Pine Script is TradingView's language for indicators and strategies.
  • Strategies + Strategy Tester let you backtest rules on Indian and global markets.
  • You can get Pine Script without coding by building rules visually and exporting.
  • Always use realistic costs and test across markets before trusting results.
