TradingView is the charting platform most traders use today, from beginners in Kolkata to professionals in New York. Its library contains thousands of built-in and community indicators — and that is exactly the problem. Beginners add ten indicators, get ten conflicting signals and freeze.
Here are the best TradingView indicators for beginners, what each one is for, and a simple layout that keeps your chart readable.
The rule: one tool per job
Every indicator should answer a specific question:
| Question | Indicator |
|---|---|
| What is the trend? | Moving averages (EMA/SMA) |
| Is momentum strong or fading? | RSI or MACD |
| Is there participation? | Volume |
| Where is intraday fair value? | VWAP |
| How volatile is the market? | ATR or Bollinger Bands |
If two indicators answer the same question, remove one.
1. Moving averages (EMA 20/50, SMA 200)
The most useful indicator for beginners. A 20 or 50 EMA shows short- to medium-term trend; the 200 SMA shows the long-term trend. Price above rising averages = bullish context. Learn more in EMA vs SMA.
2. Volume
TradingView shows volume by default on most stock charts. Add a 20-period moving average of volume to spot unusual activity, especially on breakouts. See volume analysis.
3. RSI (14)
Measures momentum. Use it to see whether a pullback is losing steam or a rally is overstretched — and remember that strong trends keep RSI elevated. Full guide: RSI indicator explained.
4. MACD (12, 26, 9)
An alternative momentum tool showing trend shifts through crossovers and the histogram. Choose RSI or MACD as your main momentum tool to keep things simple. See MACD explained.
5. VWAP (for intraday traders)
The volume-weighted average price of the day. Many intraday traders treat price above VWAP as bullish and below as bearish. Read our VWAP trading strategy.
6. ATR (14)
Average True Range shows how much an instrument typically moves. It is invaluable for setting stop-losses that are not too tight. See stop-loss strategies.
7. Bollinger Bands (20, 2)
Show relative highs and lows and volatility squeezes. Useful for range trading and spotting upcoming breakouts (Bollinger Bands guide).
A clean starter layout
- Main chart: candles + 20 EMA + 200 SMA.
- Panel 1: volume with a 20-period average.
- Panel 2: RSI (14).
- Add VWAP only on intraday charts and ATR only when planning stops.
That is it. Everything else — support, resistance, trendlines — you draw yourself.
Custom and premium indicators
TradingView's community and paid indicators can be helpful — for example, tools that automatically mark levels, sessions or trend states. Before you trust any indicator:
- understand what it calculates,
- check whether it repaints (changes past signals after the fact),
- test it over many trades.
BullishBrush also offers TradingView indicators built for our students' methods — designed to support analysis, not replace it.
From indicator to strategy
Indicators become useful when they are part of written rules. Turn your favourite combination into a strategy and test it in our strategy builder, then export it to TradingView as Pine Script with Pro.
Key takeaways
- Use one indicator per job: trend, momentum, volume, volatility.
- Moving averages, volume, RSI/MACD, VWAP and ATR cover almost everything beginners need.
- Keep charts clean; draw levels yourself.
- Test any indicator — especially community ones — before trusting it.
Frequently asked questions
Which TradingView indicator is the most accurate?
No indicator is accurate on its own. The most useful ones are those you understand and combine with price action and risk management.
Are free TradingView indicators enough?
Yes. The built-in indicators listed here are free and cover everything beginners need.
What does repainting mean?
A repainting indicator changes its past values after new data arrives, making historical signals look better than they were in real time. Avoid trading signals from indicators you know repaint.
