Technical analysis is the study of price and volume to understand how buyers and sellers are behaving. It does not predict the future with certainty, but it gives you a structured way to plan trades and manage risk.
The core ideas
- Price reflects what market participants know and expect.
- Prices often move in trends rather than in a straight random line.
- Crowd behaviour tends to repeat, which is why some patterns appear again and again.
What you need to start
- A free charting platform such as TradingView or your broker's charts
- A notebook or spreadsheet to journal what you learn and every practice trade
- Patience — skill comes from reviewing many charts, not from one strategy
Step 1: Read candlesticks
Each candle shows the open, high, low and close for a period. Start with a few patterns — doji, hammer and engulfing — and always read them in the context of the trend and nearby levels.
Step 2: Mark support and resistance
Support is an area where buying has repeatedly stopped a fall; resistance is where selling has repeatedly stopped a rise. Draw zones, not thin lines, on higher timeframes first.
Step 3: Learn a few chart patterns
Double tops and bottoms, head and shoulders, and triangles help you see when a trend may be continuing or changing. Wait for confirmation rather than guessing early.
Step 4: Add one or two indicators
Moving averages, RSI and MACD are useful for confirming what price is already showing. Using many indicators at once usually creates confusion, not clarity.
Step 5: Practise without risking money
Paper trade or back-test on historical charts. For each trade write the reason, entry, stop-loss and target, then review the result honestly.
Step 6: Make risk management a habit
Decide how much you can lose on one trade before you enter — many traders keep it to 1–2% of capital. Our free position size calculator does the maths for you.
