Option Greeks Explained: Delta, Gamma, Theta and Vega in Plain English

· BullishBrush · 3 মিনিটে পড়া

Have you ever bought a call, watched the index go up, and still lost money? The explanation is in the option Greeks. They measure how an option's price responds to changes in the underlying price, time, volatility and interest rates.

You do not need advanced maths to use them. You need to understand what each one means.

Delta: sensitivity to price

Delta shows how much the option premium changes for a 1-point move in the underlying.

  • Calls have delta between 0 and 1; puts between 0 and −1.
  • An ATM option has a delta around 0.5 (or −0.5 for puts).
  • Deep ITM options have delta near 1 (or −1); far OTM options near 0.

Example: a call with delta 0.4 gains about 40 paise for every 1-rupee rise in the underlying (all else equal).

Delta is also used as a rough estimate of the probability that an option expires in the money, and to measure the directional exposure of a whole position.

Gamma: how fast delta changes

Gamma measures how much delta changes for a 1-point move.

  • Highest for ATM options close to expiry.
  • High gamma means your position's direction can change quickly — exciting for buyers, dangerous for sellers near expiry.

Theta: time decay

Theta shows how much value an option loses per day, all else equal.

  • Option buyers have negative theta (they lose value daily).
  • Option sellers have positive theta (they gain from decay).
  • Decay speeds up as expiry approaches, especially for ATM options.

This is why buying options and waiting for a move that comes too late often loses money.

Vega: sensitivity to volatility

Vega shows how much the premium changes for a 1% change in implied volatility (IV).

  • Buyers benefit when IV rises; sellers benefit when IV falls.
  • IV often rises before major events (results, budgets, elections) and falls sharply after — the IV crush. A buyer can be right on direction and still lose if IV collapses.

Rho: interest rates

Rho measures sensitivity to interest-rate changes. For short-dated index options, it is usually the least important Greek.

How Greeks change together

Situation Effect
Expiry approaching Theta grows (ATM), gamma grows (ATM), vega shrinks
Price moves toward strike Gamma rises, delta moves toward 0.5
IV rises Premiums rise, buyers gain, sellers lose
Big event passes IV often drops, premiums fall

Using Greeks to manage a position

  • Directional exposure: total delta tells you how much the position behaves like the underlying.
  • Time risk: total theta tells you how much you earn or lose per day if nothing happens.
  • Volatility risk: total vega tells you exposure to IV changes — important before events.
  • Stability: high negative gamma (short options near expiry) means losses can accelerate quickly.

Our free options strategy builder calculates total delta, gamma, theta per day and vega for any multi-leg position using the Black-Scholes model. Compare, for example:

Change days to expiry and IV to see how the Greeks shift.

Key takeaways

  • Delta = price sensitivity; gamma = change in delta; theta = daily decay; vega = volatility sensitivity.
  • Buyers fight theta and benefit from rising IV; sellers earn theta and suffer from rising IV.
  • Greeks change with time and price — especially near expiry.
  • Use total position Greeks to understand risk before trading.

Frequently asked questions

Which Greek is most important for option buyers?

Theta and vega, because time decay and falling volatility can erode premiums even when direction is right.

What is a good delta for buying options?

Many traders prefer deltas around 0.4–0.6 (near the money) over far-OTM options with very low delta, which need large moves to profit.

Why do options lose value on expiry day so fast?

Because theta and gamma are highest for ATM options near expiry; the remaining time value disappears quickly.
