Stock Market Basics: A Beginner's Guide to Investing

· BullishBrush

The stock market can look complicated from the outside. Once you understand a few core ideas, it becomes much easier to follow — and much easier to avoid common mistakes.

What is the stock market?

The stock market is a place where shares of listed companies are bought and sold. A share is a small piece of ownership in a company. In India, shares trade on two main exchanges: the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The market is regulated by SEBI.

Why do people invest?

  • Long-term growth: businesses that grow their profits can become more valuable over time.
  • Protection from inflation: money left idle loses purchasing power every year.
  • Dividends: some companies share part of their profit with shareholders.
  • Liquidity: listed shares can usually be bought or sold on any trading day.

The trade-off is risk. Share prices go up and down, sometimes sharply, and there is no guaranteed return.

Key terms to know

  • Share / stock: a unit of ownership in a company.
  • Broker: a SEBI-registered firm that places your orders on the exchange.
  • Demat account: holds your shares in electronic form.
  • Index: a basket that tracks a part of the market, such as Nifty 50 or Sensex.
  • Bull / bear market: a period of generally rising / falling prices.
  • IPO: when a company sells shares to the public for the first time.

How to start in India

  1. Open a demat and trading account with a SEBI-registered broker.
  2. Complete your KYC online with PAN and Aadhaar.
  3. Learn before you invest: understand how to read a company's business and a basic price chart.
  4. Decide how much you can afford to keep invested for years, not weeks.
  5. Start small, diversify, and keep a written record of every decision.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Buying on tips without understanding the business
  • Putting all money into one stock
  • Jumping into futures and options before learning the basics
  • Panic selling during normal market falls
